Choose to live a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness: it is a process of change and growth towards a mentally and physically healthy lifestyle.
Our Co-founder of Neuro-Wellness Alliance, Jennifer Parkinson, is all too familiar with this concept and is living proof that a healthy lifestyle can make a big impact on living a better life with a chronic neurological disorder.
In 2005, Jennifer was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s disease. She was 32 years old, a working registered nurse, and had just given birth to her second child. In the two years leading up to this diagnosis, she began to notice tremors and muscle rigidity, she would later find were characteristic of Parkinson’s Disease. Jennifer refused to see her debilitative diagnosis as fixed, and actively researched treatments. Research, that would lead her to noncontact, therapeutic boxing.
In 2009, Jennifer decided to take her first shot at boxing and walked into world-champion kickboxer Dale Jacoby‘s boxing studio in Agoura Hills. Jennifer worked with Mr. Jacoby through grueling forced intense exercise routines and eventually her body began to respond positively and her symptoms began to decrease. During this time she became convinced of the special ability boxing has to improve the lives of those with Parkinson’s disease and went on to create, promote, and work with multiple boxing/Parkinson’s organizations.
Since her diagnosis, Jennifer has continued to push herself physically and her abilities have continued to improve. In 2015, she joined the “10 Mountains 10 Years” project, whose mission is to raise worldwide awareness for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's Disease. She climbed Mt Etna in Italy, an active volcano which stands at just under 11,000 feet.
Again in 2019, Jennifer returned to Italy for The Pilgrimage To Enlightenment Ambassador Project. The team trekked 115 miles across Sicily in 10 days enduring brutal temperatures ranging from 105-115 degrees most days. The journey was filmed in a documentary to be released at a later date.
Recently our Co-Founder Jennifer Parkinson participated in the Parkinson Community Los Angeles (PCLA) Women in PD Discussion Panel about the unmet needs of Women Living with Parkinson's. She was on a distinguished Panel with Sharon Krischer, Sri Sripathy and moderated by Angela Neff.
Your generous contribution help support our mission to improve the quality of life for those living with Parkinson's, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury.
